Will they succeed?

A better question is, Why would they want to?

Here at iniTecc, we are quite used to hearing about new competition coming to town which will make another vendor’s product obsolete, a real concern for most brands, but not Ubiquity. These guys come back every other year with a different iteration of THEIR OWN SUCCESSFUL seller with he unique intent to make it go extinct. Its like they’re saying, “You’re not taking over our market, WE ARE!”

Conclusion

The U6-Mesh should be released soon. It is the U6 version of the flexHD; it is just like the flexHD, Ethernet port and all, and can be used as a wired or wirelessly up-linked AP. It has been in early access for months along with the Lite and LR and should hopefully hit GA soon. Its form factor is highly versatile, compared to the regular APs it’s especially well-suited to just being placed on a table or shelf. Its antenna radiation pattern should be similar to the flexHDs which is pretty much omni-directional.

What is important is that you understand the antenna radiation pattern of these units. In general, UniFi APs shaped like this, if you were to ceiling-mount them, have a poor signal above themselves. Additionally, keep in mind that obstructions reduce wi-fi signal strength, especially for 5GHz. They haven’t posted the pattern for the U6 APs yet but in general think convex parabolic emission.

Placing the unit it on top of a wooden table face-up will only work comparably well to wall- or ceiling-mounting it in the same room if the table is quite low and most of the devices it’s servicing are located above it and there are no obstructions between it and those devices other than what would be present (e.g. walls) if it were properly mounted. If this is a fairly high table and there’s clutter around it, then it simply won’t work as well.

Horror Stories

We often hear from our clients out on “the field”. Common accidents that occur involve bridges and lap posts. More often than not they all begin by trying out 1 to 3 different cheap (under $100) drones before giving in and buying a $400 (DJI mavic mini, Holly Stone HS270 or even Kasono) drone. If you’re into aerial photography, it’ is our advice that you spend the money. The drone itself flies better and handles better out of the box, but beyond that the instructions, app, and support are all in native English, which none of the cheap models we know of could claim.

Conclusion

Take console in the fact that even older drones like the DJI Phantom 3 have really impressive features to prevent stuff like hitting a bridge full on. We have witnessed members of our junior test team ram drones, full speed, into a metal pole about 4 feet off the ground. It flipped over twice, stabilized, then kept flying normally. Worse case scenarion they all feature the ability to automatically return to the point they took off from if the connection is lost for too long or if the battery is running out. We also know that many of the loos of control issues stem from poles and bridges causing interference, because otherwise drones are typically quite good at saving themselves.

And Yes, competition IS always great, however we don’t think any company will step up to the plate – 3DR, Parrot, and even GoPro have failed miserably as of this writing.

Hopefully DJI’s recent acquisition of Hassleblad will improve their camera technology and change the bleak landscape. 

The issue is that if there is no pressure from competition then they is no incentive for them to improve in a big way.

Conclusion

To be Fair, we are not implying that Drone HDR is either good or bad, it just reminds us of those paintings you see of dreamy farm fields or whatnot. These HDR photos always seem to have that sort of idyllic dreamlike vibe.

Readymade and full of good specs, but are they ready to evolve? We found a mixed-bag of humblebrag and DIY. 

They’re are issues.

We think the issue is they haven’t yet really made a (consumer) drone optimized for still photography. But it’s not like anyone is – Parrot, GoPro etc are all chasing after the market that wants 4k video. Our best guess is that the market that wants these primarily for stills is just much smaller, which explains the product decisions. 4K video basically means you’re optimizing for processing speed rather than resolution or image quality.

Conclusion

Dji may have dropped their support for 4-packs, but only time will tell if evolution will occur.
